This small region is famous for its wines bearing the region's name, which are amongst some of the world's finest. It is also a land of history and culture. One of its many monasteries, San Millán de la Cogolla, is said to be the birthplace of the Spanish language, which first appeared in the late 9th century. Paths to Santiago cross the region's lands.
In Logroño, the capital, you won't want to miss the 9th-century Santa María del Palacio church with its 150-foot pyramidical belfry, or the San Bartolomé church with its Gothic door, one of the most important works from that period in all the region.
